This year’s recipients

Kayla Adams and Felicia Adams are natives of Hopkins, SC. Both these young ladies are products of Richland County School District One. After completing their secondary education in 2016 and 2019, both young ladies went on to pursue higher education. Felicia (pictured to the right) went on to pursue higher education at Midlands Technical College to receive a degree in Early Childhood Education. Felicia enjoys making an impact on younger children at an early age which she believes is one of the most important parts of individuals lifespan. With much hope, she hopes to continue her education and impact many other children with much love and laughter. Kayla (pictured to the left) pursued higher education at the University of South Carolina – Columbia, where she maintained her academics through making the Dean’s and President’s List. Kayla received her Bachelor of Arts in Public Health in Spring 2020 and currently is a candidate for a MPH degree in Health Education, Promotion, and Behavior at the University of South Carolina – Columbia. Kayla enjoys studying public health as one day she believes she will make a great impact to ensure many people around her are given the opportunity to live a great quality of life. Kayla and Felicia are advocates for the James R. Clark Sickle Cell Memorial Foundation where each year they join as one team to raise awareness and funds to support those like themselves to attend college. Both young ladies are previous and current recipients of the James R Clark Sickle Cell Memorial Foundation Scholarship.

Scholarship Application and Selection Process Information

Purpose of Scholarship Program: The purpose of this scholarship program is to reward the academic achievement of individuals with sickle cell disease and to promote the pursuit of their educational goals.

The number of Awards, Amount, and Duration: The number of scholarships given in any year will depend on the amount in the Scholarship Fund and the number of quality applicants. Each applicant chosen will receive a total of $1,000 per academic year. The award will be disbursed in $500 increments per semester (Fall and Spring) based on academic status. Scholarship recipients may reapply annually, along with new applicants, but are not guaranteed any recurring funding. Awards will be given based on the competitiveness of each year’s applicant class.

Who Qualifies: High school seniors or current college students with sickle cell disease who have been accepted to or are currently attending a 2-year or 4-year college are eligible to apply for the scholarship. Individuals with sickle cell traits are not eligible. Applicants must provide proof of illness, as well as proof of U. S. citizenship.

Severity of academic challenges/obstacles posed by sickle cell disease

Students living in the following counties of South Carolina: Chesterfield, Clarendon, Darlington, Dillon, Fairfield, Florence, Kershaw, Lancaster, Lee, Lexington, Marion, Marlboro, Newberry, Richland, Sumter.

Students must remain in “good standing” by the definition of college or university. Official college transcripts are required each semester prior to the disbursement of the award. One semester of academic probation forfeits disbursement; two consecutive semesters of academic probation forfeits the scholarship.

  • In addition, the following information is required for an application package to be

    considered complete:

    • Physician’s statement confirming applicant’s sickle cell status.

    • An official high school transcript, including SAT/ACT scores (please return in a

    sealed school envelope)

    • An official letter from the college where the applicant has been accepted and is

    planning to attend school (please return in a sealed school envelope)

    • Proof of U.S. citizenship and permanent residency (i.e., copies of Driver’s

    License or State-Issued ID AND Social Security Card)

    • Typewritten, 1,000-word essay on the impact of sickle cell disease on applicant’s

    life or on society.
