Great Food, Great People, Great Atmosphere
The story of Mac’s
Mac’s Drive In has been operating since 1956, when Dan Gentry opened a diner called “Dan’s Diner,” and was a small diner in an old trolly car. Dan also owned Dan’s on the corner of College Avenue and Highway 93, where TD’s Food and Drink is today. Eventually, Dan grew tired of running two restaurants and sold Dan’s Diner to his employee, Harold McKeown, who also went by Mac. Dan had borrowed the money from a local banker for Mac to purchase the diner! The next year, Mac changed the name to “Mac’s Drive In.” In 1965 he built the brick building that is still in use today. In 2007, ESPNs Todd Blackledge wrote about Mac’s in his book Taste of the Town, a book sold around the country. USA Today Travel named it one of the 51 Greatest Hamburger Joints in the Country. On December 30th, 2009, Mac passed away, leaving the diner to be owned and operated by Pat Hunter. Even though Mac is no longer with us, his memory lives on in his diner. Pat still runs the diner today, serving up traditional homemade food, and adding new memorabilia to the walls when he can.
